Beating The Competition With LED Lighting |
|

|
Are you an electrical contractor finding it tough to compete these days with lack of work and little to no margins on the bids that you do win? Let me share a secret with you that can change your advantage: It's called LED lighting.
I understand that LED lighting is a new technology and you're still trying to catch up with the last technology that just came out. But considering the tremendous benefits surrounding LEDs, many of which could give you an extreme advantage on a bid over your competitor, it's important to take some time to do your research and start getting creative in these challenging times.
Lets look at the ways LED lighting could in fact lower your bid as an alternate vs. raising the price with new technology. Have you ever bid on a kitchen or restaurant project, which are typically leased spaces with limited existing electrical services, so using each available circuit is critical? With the entire electrical load required for the kitchen equipment you are left with minimal available space and circuits in your existing electrical panel. Well here comes secret number one: LED lighting consumes less amperage than any other lighting source, which means less circuits and less amperage required.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lets take a look at a typical scenario. We have a kitchen with 24 2x4 4-lamp recessed fluorescent lights (your typical kitchen fixture) which draws 1.62 Amps (140-Watts) each fixture, so 1.62 Amps x 24 = 38.8 Amps. We know that the standard commercial circuit breaker is rated at 20 amps and we can only load it to 80 percent, so we are allowed to load one circuit up to 16 amps or 9 fixtures per circuit, in this case. Considering that 24 divided by nine is 2.67, we need to use up three circuit breakers, run three homerun circuits to electrical panel and then three branch circuits from the switch to the lighting. Not to mention, we have to cut a very large hole in the wall to fit a three-gang box for the three switches.
Now let's take a look at LED. A typical 2x4 4-lamp recessed fixture replacement in LED would be a 55-Watt or 0.46 Amp fixture. Consider this: 24 fixtures multiplied by 0.46 Amps equals 11.04 amps. Don't know if you caught this, but remember that we use 16 Amps per breaker ¨C looks like we only need one circuit breaker, one homerun, one switch branch circuit, one switch and one hole in the wall for one switch box -- with room to add 10 more fixtures on the same circuit. Think of your labor savings and how much lower your quote will be to your customer than your competitor. On very large commercial kitchens it could save you an entire electrical panel, eliminating expensive feeders, main switches and service upgrades.
Another great advantage of LED lights is that they instantly turn on with no warm up time. Think of the many metal halide warehouse and parking lot projects you have bid on that require a separate 4ft fluorescent for egress and emergency requirements due to the fact metal halide and HID fixtures can take up to 10 minutes to turn back on after a power failure. Well LED can replace that lighting system and the fact that the fixtures turn on immediately could save you from installing all those additional 4ft fluorescents and extra circuitry.
Bet your running back to all the bids you just finished, giving them a second look with LED, right? I don't blame you, but not so fast. Make sure you don't look like a fool submitting an alternate that sounds incredible then fall flat on your face because you picked the wrong products. This is where you need to go to the experts. After all, I wouldn't call a plumber to hook up my paddle fan, so picking the right LED vendor is key in making it all work in your favor.
