Brand New LED Lights for the Historical Tower Bridge |
|
|
|
One of London's most iconic landmarks, Tower Bridge, is to undergo major renovation work in the run up to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
In preparation for the event, which will be televised to millions of people worldwide, the bridge is to receive a state of the art, energy efficient LED Lighting and cabling system costing in the region of 2 million.
Thanks to a joint initiative between the City of London (who own the bridge), General Electric (GE) and London 2012 sustainability partners EDF Energy, the bridge's new lighting will be funded without incurring any cost to the taxpayer.
The bridge currently uses 25-year-old static floodlights, which are highly inefficient and flatten the visual appearance of the architecture. The new system of LED Lights is expected to cut energy consumption by nearly 40 per cent while also enhancing the bridge's world-renowned architetural features on a night time.
Ads by Google A DMX system will allow the colour and intensity of the lights to be matched with the various festivals and events within the London area, including the forthcoming anniversary of the Queen.
The entire system will comprise 1,800 LED Lights which have been supplied by global lighting experts Citelum. The company have also designed lighting systems for other historic monuments around the world, including the Valley of the Kings in Egypt and the Eiffel Tower in France.
Installation of the lights is a complex procedure and will be performed by crews of experienced abseilers and electrical fitters. They will spend more than 4,000 hours suspended high above the Thames installing 2,000 metres of LED Strip Lights, 5,000 metres of cable and 1,000 junction boxes.
Speaking to reporters back in 2011, Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said 'I want London to look its very best in 2012 as the eyes of the world are upon us. Tower Bridge is one of this city's most stunning landmarks, recognised the world over and therefore deserving a star role in these year-long celebrations. I am thrilled to have brokered this deal - at no cost to the taxpayer - to bathe Tower Bridge in eco-friendly light to create a fresh perspective of this wonderful icon. This another great legacy for London stretching for decades beyond the Olympic year.'
Since 1097 the five bridges serving the central London area have been paid for by the Bridge House Estates charity. We wonder what the charities founders would have to say about the bridge's new LED Lighting system? |
