Blue Light Therapy- Incorporating The Wavelength That Matters The Most! |

Out of the five senses a man possesses, sight is one great blessing we can't stop thanking God for. Our eyes allow us to captivate the beauties of our planet in our minds and hence have a key relation with the brain. Not only that they serve this very purpose, but there is an added functionality of them relaying the brain that whether it's dark or light out there! Studies show that this function is not carried out with the same parts of the eye you are reading out these words with. Light or to be more specific, a certain wavelength of light for this matter plays the role itself and that too surprisingly is none other than blue light! Our eyes sense the blue light and hence the differentiation of day from night comes in! Blue light for this reason is being progressively used in light therapies to serve a number of problems from mental disorders to depressive problems originating from light deprivation and even skin complications. Blue Light Therapy can hence, surely be termed as a revolutionary innovation in the medical domain!
Ads by Google At some part of your life in some biology class for example, you must've learned that the retina in the eye has different kinds of light receptors, more commonly known as rods and cones, whereby the rods are used for night vision and motion detection while the cones are used to determine the color, depth and intensity of the object. Color vision requires an involvement of three types of cones that sense three different wavelengths; red, blue and green. To one's surprise there is another light receptor present at the back of our eye that was discovered a bit later in 2001 and is responsible for telling the brain that whether it's day or light outside. Now, this dark/light receptor is naturally finely tuned to sense blue light only! Have a look at the graph below. As we all know that light consists of a spectrum of light that is depicted in the graph ranging from the very blue at the left to the very red at the right, the highlighted area in yellow. Though our eyes can see all the colors utilizing the cones, the striped peak illustrates the only color the dark/light receptor actually looks for occurring at about 475 nm and that being of blue light, confirms the fact that these special receptors are stimulated only for a fraction of the entire light spectrum.
Using blue light for Light Therapy
Blue light being an essential component for supplementing our vision is now being more commonly used in light therapies to cure depressive orders such as winter depression that might lead to a severe condition, namely Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Such a mental disorder occurs in people experiencing light deprivation for a prolonged time period. Patients for this purpose are made to sit in front of a light box for a calculated amount of time that depends on the severity of the condition.
Not only is blue light used to alleviate such disorders but skin complications can be reduced to a great extent using blue light products. Acne suffering people, tired of applying messy creams and lotions often look for an alternative that efficient, workable and affordable. Well, blue light therapy certainly falls under all these characteristics. A technology that has been proven to help ailing patients worldwide!
