What Light Therapy Has to Do with Conquering Seasonal Depression |
|
|
|
SAD is a kind of depression triggered by the seasons. The most commonly occurring is what they call winter-onset depression. Maybe it's due to the cold weather and the thickness of the air. Some SAD patients experience what is called summer-onset depression; a SAD, which starts in the late spring then goes away by winter.
As much as 6% of people in the US suffer from seasonal depression. Although it occurs mainly among people who are 20 years old and up, some children and teens may also have it. Winter-onset SAD is a lot more rampant in the northern regions where winter is longer and harsher.
Seasonal affective disorder has common symptoms but you should remember that not everyone who suffers from it have the same ones. Some of the most common symptoms are:
•Weight gain •Lethargy •Fatigue •Oversleeping •Irritability •Anxiety •Heightened sensitivity to social rejection •Change in appetite, usually craving for sweet foods or starchy ones •Avoidance of social gatherings Ads by Google These symptoms of seasonal depression may come back every year and the mood changes are not necessarily caused by any obvious things.
Luckily, there are ways for overcoming seasonal depression. One of the most effective is light therapy. Of course, you don't really get a lot of sun during winter so what you can do is use alternatives such as light box, light visor, or dawn stimulator. Using a light box, you can sit down in front of it for 30 minutes every day throughout the winter months. If using a visor, then you should wear it for the same duration.
You can also use the other kind of light therapy, which is called dawn stimulator. It is a timer-activated light that you can set up in the bedroom to mimic sunrise. It turns on at dawn and then gradually increases brightness so your body could naturally wake up even without the use of any alarm.
Light therapy can be a very effective tool in overcoming seasonal depression and the great thing about it is you won't have to take any medication or go through behavior therapy. The light would be enough to lighten your burden. Great, right? |
