Tools and Materials for Installing Recessed Light Fixtures

You will also need your chosen recessed light fixtures and their eyeball lights, non-metallic building electrical wire that meets your local codes and the installation requirements of your chosen light fixtures and various electrical necessaries such as staples or wire nuts.
Installing Recessed Light Fixtures
Warning: Always turn off the power in the rooms you will be working in to prevent electrical shock. Next, in the attic you will run the electrical wire from the switch's location in the wall to the first recessed light fixture. Continue attaching the lights using the electrical wire as directed by the manufacturer's instructions.
Tip: black wires are hot, white wires are neutral and bare or green wires are the grounding wires; however this may not apply to all wiring. Always check with the manufacturer's instructions.
If necessary, you may also need to install new switch boxes for your light fixtures. If you are unsure of how to install switch boxes, consult a professional. Be sure to rewire any existing and new wires to the new switch box, if a new switch box was deemed necessary.
Finish up by securing the light fixtures with the necessary components as per your manufacturer's instructions. Secure any loose wires using UL-Listed cable staples if recommended by the manufacturer before turning on the power and testing the lights.
